Blackwell, known to his family and friends as Jack, served as a stoker on HMS Sharpshooter from 1941 until after the vessel returned to the U.K. from the Mediterranean in the autumn of 1944. He was born in 1908 and died in 1981 and apart from his war service worked as a butcher in his family business until he retired.

Period as rating aboard HMS Sharpshooter during evacuation of Dunkirk, 5/1940-6/1940: minesweeping role; nature of ship; close security concerning evacuation operation; weather in English Channel; embarkation from beaches to ship by means of whaler; initial lack of order in evacuation; important role of British railways; improvement in evacuation; collision with St Helier and consequent damage to ship; rescue of soldier in laundry basket; repairs to ship; story of being left behind on sailing.
REEL 2 Continues: story of rejoining ship; question of responsibility for collision with St Helier; sight of sinking; time needed to turn around on dropping troops off at Dover; crowded conditions on board; lifeboat flotilla; lack of order amongst French troops; conduct of evacuation; question of 'miracle' of Dunkirk.

Taylor Frank         Frank Taylor. HMS SharpshooterBorn in Ashton-Under-Lyne in 1911, died in Ashton April 19th. 1975, the picture is from 1969. Frank seldom talked about his time in the war, when asked about the ramming, his comment was “That U-boat went down with all hands.” I suppose in the euphoria of the moment everything was rosy, but with hindsight he realised they were lads, just like him.

DAD WAS ALSO RUM BOSUN HE GAVE OUT THE TOTS OF RUM IN A MORNING, 11AM I THINK IT WAS AND IF ANYONE DIDN'T HAPPEN TO WANT THEIRS DAD HELPED THEM OUT AND DRANK THEIRS FOR THEM, HE ALSO DIVED OFF THE TOP MAST INTO THE WATERS IN MALTA HE SAID HE MUST HAVE GONE DOWN 40 FATHOMS, THEY HAD AN EXPERT SWIMMER ON BOARD SHARPSHOOTER AND HE WAS DIVING OFF AND DAD THOUGHT HE WOULD HAVE A GO, AFTER A FEW TOTS OF COURSE, GOD MUST OF BEEN LOOKING DOWN ON HIM AS HE SURVIVED TO TELL THE TALE.
